Okay, so most of us know that it was a holiday (Columbus Day) yesterday. Government offices and banks were closed, right?
As I mentioned in a previous post, I was off, but Dirk had to work. While on his way home, I asked him to stop at the ATM to get some cash. He called me back just minutes after we'd hung up. "The ATM kept my debit card," he said.
In a panic, I asked, "What do you mean the machine kept your card?"
In a calm voice, (and as usual...I tell ya this man will live longer than me) he slowly said, "The ATM did not return my card." He tried to settle my nerves by saying that he had stayed behind to watch the next person to see if perhaps it would come back out to them. It didn't. Okay, we've never lost a card of any type. So needless to say, I had no idea what the ramifications (other than being robbed silly) could come from this. All of sudden, I had this sick feeling and the thought that, if we waited until morning, that we wouldn't have a penny left in our account.
As I was dialing the bank's number and already knowing that it was going to be impossible to reach a live person at a closed bank, I started freaking out on the inside. No one answered. So, I tried calling their 800 #. You know as well I do that anytime you call an 800 #, you're going to go through 15 prompts before hearing the one you actually need!
I was given the option to cancel the card, so I cancelled it. Due to me being so anal and compulsive about things, I called back two more times to cancel the card.
Wait! It's get worse (I mean better). LOL!
I didn't trust that I had already cancelled this stupid card three times now, so I went online to get a differnt 800 # to the bank. I called it...listened to it, and this time when I pressed zero for an operator, I actually got someone. She (the bank rep) probably thought that I was a total idiot. I explained to her what the urgency was. After looking at our account, she said, "Yes, Mrs. Reeves, I show that you cancelled the card several times. It is cancelled."
I went on to ask why the machine decided to keep the card and what happens if the card eventually comes back out.
Though she couldn't explain why the machine would keep the card, she did reassure me that if a machine keeps a card, it's normally shredded. I could sense in her voice that she was probably thinking I was a loonie!
You would have thought that I had a million dollars or something, huh?

I would have completely done the same thing. When it comes to money I flip out sometimes. Bryan and I by no means have a lot of money either but we work hard for what we do have. I don't want it to get into someone else's hands. I sure hope the ATM machine never keeps my card. I'd probably cry.
I would have freaked a little...for sure! I hate it when things like that happen.
I am the same way! I would double checked after double checking because I learn from my mistakes! I haven't double checked in the past and got bitten for it!
Daphine,
You crack me up!! The way you write is like I'm talking right to you. I love it!!
Just so you know, I would have reacted in the same way that you did. I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to things like that. I would have been worried silly that my ATM card would have gotten into someone else's hands without it actually being CANCELLED. Hey, you just never know sometimes, so it pays to be extra cautious.
Hey my Friend, I'm with YOU.. your money is YOUR money! I think it's fair that you got nervous about it! =-)
That is weird though.. HHMMM
Oh well, I'm sure your hubby is PROUD to have such a responsible wife. ;-)
Hi Daphine,
This is my first visit to your blog. You are a riot! I've gone and read all of your posts and we have so much in common.
Especially that little, somewhat "unhealthy" organization thing. However, I am questioning the idea of ice cream and chips. But I won't knock it til I've tried it!
You really made my day. I can't wait to visit again!
Okay, I guess I'm weird. I don't think I would have freaked out. Maybe I'm more like Dirk. I just figure what happens happens. I would call and cancel it and then move on. But I have noticed in myself anyway that I tend to be pretty trusting, sometimes even bordering naive. I'm surprised sometime I haven't had more things stolen just because I'm not very cautious. I hope God has mercy on me and doesn't try to teach me the hard way.
I would have freaked out too. I am glad someone ended up answering...so what if you had already cancelled it 3 times at least you had someone there confirm it.
I have read before about some sort of magnetic thing that thieves can put in an atm machine and you have already put in your pin number and the card doesn't return, then they wait till you leave, take that thing out and withdraw the maximum allowed. I would have been freaking!!!!!
I once had an ATM keep my card. I was able to get it back the next day.
My husband left his debit card in an ATM in a Walmart in another town once. I freaked out and made several phone calls. They assured me that it had been shredded, but I still worried!
I would have done the samething I hope this never happens to me but with my bank I wouldn't be surprised at anything they do!
I would have done the same thing.
You don't know if the card would come back out when Dirk left and someone else could have got it.
Tonya
Ok, this story was actually so funny because I could picture how you were acting as you dialed the bank numbers. I'm sorry to say that I am actually laughing just thinking about it. I know you probably dialed that number faster than I've ever seen anyone dial in my life!!!
Of course, I would have cancelled the card as well (and probably just as many times to be safe) so you did the right thing!
Daphine,
It's so difficult not to become scared in today's society when you hear so much about identity theft and people taking trucks and removing ATM's, etc.
Thank the Lord, all is ok. ((hugs))
in your case, i'm pretty sure cancelled means cancelled! LOL. that's classic. the bank saw you called 3 times to cancel and knew you meant business! LOL.
LOL!!! "Yes, Mrs. Reeves, I show that you cancelled the card several times. It is cancelled."
That is hilarious. Girl. I've left mine in there too long (was not paying attention to what it was asking me, and it thought I had left), so the ATM kept it.
You are a mess. A funny mess.
I can't wait to read your posts once you get that puppy dog you've been teasing us all about. :P
Btw--when it happened to me, I was just more annoyed than anything. I guess I called about it, but I really don't remember. Yeah--I must have called, just to see how/if I would get it back.
